How to Share Your Hopes, Dreams, and Prayers for Our Shared Home

Want to send your climate hopes and prayers with us to the State Capitol? Here's how to share your voice—we'll carry your words to legislators on February 5th and amplify what matters to New Mexicans.

We want to carry your voice to the State Capitol.

As we walk from the Permian Basin to Santa Fe, we're inviting you to send us your hopes, dreams, and prayers for New Mexico's climate future. On February 5th—Climate Action Day at the Roundhouse—we will present your words directly to our state leaders as a powerful testament to what matters most to communities across our state.

But how do you write a climate prayer? What should you include? How personal should you get?

There's no single right way to do this, but we've put together some guidance to help you craft a message that comes from your heart. Whether you're comfortable with traditional prayer language or prefer to write a simple statement of hope, your voice matters. Whether you name the grief you carry or focus on the future you envision, we want to hear from you.

Below, you'll find examples to inspire you, tips for writing your submission, and the link to a form to send your prayer to us so we can carry it with us on our journey.

Prayer for the Earth, Our Shared Home

God of all that is – God who speaks love into the shape of mountains, who rests in the miracle of the moon-pulled tide, who dreams the scent of rain and sagebrush, who lives in the sweat and tears and blood and breath of everybody who knows this earth as home, I pray to You.

I pray to you from a place that feels lost. It is late December and Iris bulbs are emerging from the ground, new buds are forming on the Apricot and the Apple tree, the Three Leaf Sumac and the Cottonwood. This winter is not winter. We feel it in our cells. It feels like heartbreak and madness.

Temperature records are broken daily. We are standing at the edge of tipping points that will tilt us toward a far less hospitable planet than the one You gave us and called supremely good. We are still believing, like it is our religion, that we need to take more and more and more, even when we have already taken so much. Profit and greed are still ruling too many hearts and money is made the greatest law of the land.

Remind us God that you wrote a different law on our hearts. A law of compassion and love and comprehension of the interconnectedness into which you have woven us. Remind us that you make the impossible possible. Help us to have faith that we can heal from the mess we are making. Help us to have faith that we can remember who we are, that we can recognize all we stand to lose to the climate crisis. Remind us of the truth – terrifying, incontestable, and beautiful: we are the Earth. Dust touched by divinity, interwoven with the vastness and intimacy of all creation.

Give us the courage, God, to keep walking forward, calling each other toward this truth. Calling us toward the ground where we know that we all belong here. Give courage and wisdom to our leaders, here in New Mexico and everywhere. Help them comprehend the weight of their choices. Help them feel the closeness of the generations of life to come who will be impacted, irrevocably, by what happens here and now. Help us all to see with the clear-sightedness of children. Children who know that joy and love can wear away at the stones of indifference, who know that the world can change for the better – for the benefit of all.

God of oneness, above all else, help us see ourselves in each other. Help us hold complexity with tenderness, true listening, and compassion. As all our lives are shaped by that which we must leave behind, remind us  that there is truly no “us versus them” in this moment and movement seeking justice and peace within all creation. Over and over again, show us how to live in the sacred shape of togetherness - Your constant dream, our common destiny.

In the name of the One who came to live as love on Earth, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for a Million Steps

May the earth beneath their feet be the drum that awakens the silent heartbeat of the human spirit with every step.

To the music of their soles, may snow dance and clouds tumble and part, revealing the light of the sun on the dark horizon.

Barren branches in the dead of winter will yield ripe fruit of renewal, and douse the desert in life saccharine.

A bleeding heart that drips oil will froth and foam into sweet water, churning mica and mud like starlight into midnight. A reignition of what it means to wholly love one another.

Even the magma hidden beneath loam and soil, roils in response to the pursuit of justice.

Let not the voice of the earth fall upon steel, wires and oil rigs, but flesh and bone. Hope and compassion.

By the sacred spirit of the Land and Gift of Creation, may your humanity be the invitation home that journeys us to healing.

Rev. Dr. Ryan Tate

A Prayer for Our Shared Home

Creator of all life, we lift our voices for the land and people of New Mexico.

Guide our legislators as they consider the Clear Horizons Act, that they may choose a stable climate and livable future for all who call this place home—for our children, our elders, and generations yet to come.

Give our leaders courage to act boldly in transitioning from fossil fuels to cleaner energy, trusting that a just transition will create new opportunities while honoring the workers and communities who have powered our state.

Strengthen our government's resolve to hold industry accountable for pollution and waste, that the air we breathe and the water we drink may be clean and life-giving.

Protect and uphold the communities already bearing the weight of climate impacts—those living in sacrifice zones, those facing drought and fire, those whose health and homes are threatened.

May justice flow down like waters. We pray for wisdom, for courage, and for the political will to protect our shared home.

May it be so.
